Gov. Nathan Deal announced four winners of the Innovation in K-8 Mathematics and/or K-12 Computer Science/Coding Professional Learning Grants.
Each grant winner, including Sandy Creek High School in Fayette County, will receive $150,000 to support teacher learning programs that promote student achievement in math, or that expands student access to computer science and coding programs. Grant recipients will evaluate the effectiveness of the programs and submit findings to the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. The state will use the results to determine best practices in professional learning for math and computer science and coding.
This competitive grant program can go to Local Education Agencies (LEAs), Regional Educational Service Agencies (RESAs) and individual schools
Other than Fayette County, the winners are:
• Northwest Georgia RESA, which will partner with all 16 member LEAs to create an effective professional learning model for elementary math teaching.
• Richmond County Schools, in partnership with Georgia Southern University, will offer professional learning opportunities to an 80-member group who will participate in a Mathematics Academy for Teaching Excellence.
• Southwest Georgia RESA will provide professional learning for K-8 mathematics teachers to use critical thinking and problem-solving strategies to engage students in the learning process.
• Sandy Creek High School will provide professional learning to support the integration of coding and programming experiences into academic instruction.
