An Illinois teenager whose sister is battling an inoperable brain tumor is selling her possessions in a yard sale to help her family pay funeral expenses, KMOV reported.
Katherine Cook, 11, has been battling an aggressive brain tumor for two years, receiving radiation treatment and chemotherapy. Doctors recently told her family they were unable to stop the cancer, and advised them to begin making funeral arrangements. Family members said they do not have life insurance for Katherine and are faced with large medical bills, KMOV reported.
That prompted 15-year-old Elizabeth Cook to organize a yard sale.
“I just want her to have a beautiful funeral and a beautiful burial, so that she can be laid in peace,” Elizabeth Cook said.
Residents in the Lebanon area have responded by buying items, and others have donated to the sale. KMOV said St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal visited the family and donated a signed jersey to be sold.
The family started a GoFundMe page to assist in funeral expenses, KMOV reported. The $15,000 goal already has been exceeded; as of early Tuesday, more than $18,300 has been pledged.
