Yadira Rostro, a 31-year-old mother from Texas, endured headache pain and vision impairment for nine months before doctors discovered the culprit.
Even doctors were surprised at what they found inside Rostro’s brain.
KHOU reports that doctors at Methodist Dallas Medical Center removed larvae sacs from eight tapeworm eggs.
Doctors believe Rostro contracted the tapeworm after consuming contaminated food in Mexico two years ago. Instead of making her immediately ill, the parasite lurked in her bloodstream and eventually made its way to her brain. The headaches were triggered by fluid backup as the eggs grew.
The images were shocking to her neurosurgeon, but KHOU reports that Rostro has declined to view them.
She is expected to make a full recovery.
