Gwinnett County police announced Friday the arrest of a man on murder charges regarding the death of his 2-year-old son more than a year ago.

Homicide detectives have been investigating the death of Hunter Vanpool after deeming the death suspicious when paramedics were called to his Hamilton Mill area subdivision on April 19, 2013 when the child wasn’t breathing, said Cpl. Ed Ritter of Gwinnett police.

“The autopsy revealed the child died from a lethal amount of oxycodone in his system and the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide,” Ritter said in an email. ”Investigators learned that the child’s father, 34-year-old Kurt Vanpool obtained oxycodone and took some of the medication during the middle of the night.”

Investigators have charged Vanpool with murder because he obtained the prescription drug illegally and with cruelty to children because he took the drug in front of the child and left it in an area where the child could obtain it, Ritter said.

Vanpool no longer resides at the residence at 4885 Trilogy Park Trail in the unincorporated Hoschton area within Gwinnett County where the incident happened, Ritter said.
