Jimmy Carter’s life and legacy honored in AJC commemorative section

Jimmy Carter, the only Georgian ever elected to the White House, made his mark for decades after leaving the nation’s highest office.
He lived an extraordinary life — from Plains, to the state Capitol, to the nation’s capital and back — living to see his 100th birthday. In the years after his single presidential term, his reputation grew through his and wife Rosalynn Carter’s work at the Carter Center in Atlanta and his philanthropic causes, such as Habitat for Humanity.
To mark the impact that Carter had on our state, our nation and the world, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has published a special section, An Exemplary Life. The AJC has been there through the years as Carter’s impact grew, and our special coverage highlights his remarkable life.
Visit retail outlets in metro Atlanta where the AJC is sold to buy copies of the 24-page special edition.
Copies of this edition are also available in select locations in Plains, free of charge.
Our online store is the most convenient way to obtain copies of our coverage. In addition to the commemorative section An Exemplary Life, you can also purchase:
• The entire Dec. 30, 2024, edition that includes six pages marking Jimmy Carter’s passing.
• The Man from Plains, a 12-page special section that follows Carter’s road to the White House.

If you’re a subscriber, we want to thank you for supporting our journalism. To show our appreciation, a copy of the 24-page special section, An Exemplary Life, will be included in the Sunday, Jan. 12, edition delivered to your home. Sunday’s AJC ePaper also includes the section.
Jimmy Carter: The life and legacy of the 39th president
Read: The life story of the man from Plains
Where it all started: Plains, Georgia. The South Georgia hometown of Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, located in Sumter County along US 280, became a world fascination when Jimmy Carter became the first and only Georgian ever elected to the White House.
Carter’s legacy: Jimmy Carter’s greatest accomplishment wasn’t being president of the United States. It was what he did afterward. A curious late-night dream sparked the idea of the Carter Center, where he and his team, continued his mission toward world peace and global health.
Read this list of some of Carter’s biggest accomplishments and reflections from a former aide.
Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter: Rosalynn Carter said she thinks she fell in love first with a photograph. Rosalynn and Jimmy Carter went on to be the longest married couple in presidential history — married for more than 77 years until her death in November 2023.
