The Gwinnett County Extension, a division of UGA's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, is offering free classes open to the public during August. The idea behind extension services is to provide residents information to become healthier, more productive, financially independent and environmentally responsible.
Container Gardens – Noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 5, in the second floor conference room of the Gwinnett County Government Annex Building, 750 South Perry St., in Lawrenceville. For those with limited space or a desire to just add interest to existing gardens, using containers for garden plants is a practical solution. Composting: turning trash into treasure - 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Shoal Creek Filter Plant, 1755 Buford Dam Road in Buford. Composting is the process of using landscape waste to create fertile organic matter. It can be used improve the quality of soil and promote healthy plants. Tree Identification and Selection - Noon to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 in the second-floor conference room of the Gwinnett County Government Annex Building, 750 South Perry St. #400 in Lawrenceville. In this class, Gwinnett County Extension Agent Timothy Daly will cover how to identify some of the most common trees in home landscapes, their characteristics, and the site conditions they prefer. Fall Vegetable Gardening - 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Five Forks Library, 2780 Five Forks Trickum Road in Lawrenceville. This class will discuss how to begin a fall garden.
