A woman accused of leading officers on a chase in a stolen police cruiser while handcuffed earlier this year appeared in court Tuesday.
Investigators said 27-year-old Roxanne Rimer led officers on the chase through Pittsburgh after crawling through the glass partition of an officer’s cruiser.
Police said Rimer was detained on shoplifting suspicions prior to the chase and somehow managed to drive the cruiser with her hands behind her back.
“With her back turned and her hands cuffed behind her back, she manages to put it in gear and drive. And from what we can gather, she drove at very high speeds with that position somehow manipulating the gears and steering the wheel. Thank God, no one else was hurt,” said Center Township police Chief Barry Kramer. “She put a lot of lives in danger.”
According to Kramer, Rimer drove at 100 mph for nearly 10 miles with her hands behind her back. Kramer said the cruiser’s light and sirens were on the entire ride, which he believes likely saved a lot of lives.
WPXI reports Rimer was supposed to go to trial Tuesday, but instead agreed to a plea deal.
She will serve four to eight years for aggravated assault and fleeing and eluding, according to WPXI.
