When Rachel Hutson shot and killed her terminally ill mother in November 2013, she called her father, Donald, to tell him.
Not believing her, Donald Hutson hung up on his daughter and went back to his Black Friday shopping.
Rachel Hutson then texted a picture of Susan Hutson’s bloody body.
“That’s when I realized this is probably real,” Donald Hutson testified in court.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that Rachel Hutson's original plan was to, "kill herself, but decided it would be too hard on her mom."
According to the Daily Mail, 21-year-old Rachel Hutson had been taking care of her sick mother since she was 9.
Court records show that when Rachel Hutson pointed a shotgun at her mother, Susan Hutson thought she was joking. She told her daughter that she was “crazy,” and said her father wouldn’t be pleased when he got home.
Rachel Hutson told a judge that she had struggled with depression for years while the primary caregiver for the mother. “I felt like I was just nothing, and nobody really needed us,” she said.
Hutson asked for mercy telling the court that she “never felt like she had a chance.”
Rachel Hutson was sentenced this week to 18 years in prison for first-degree murder and use of a firearm.
