An Alpharetta homeowner was out of the country when a potential burglary happened at his house recently.

But technology helped him and police deal with the situation in real time, Channel 2 Action News reported Friday.

The homeowner got an alert on his mobile device, and he was able to send video immediately to dispatchers, according to Channel 2.

“Our units responded to a possible burglary in progress at a residence here in Alpharetta,” Officer Jason Muenzer of Alpharetta police said. Police found a suspicious car in the cul-de-sac.

Muenzer said there was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and officers also found a change of clothes and shoes in the car.

When Larry Stewart, the suspect, came to the car, he was wearing the same boots as the man in the home surveillance video. Police also found a stolen gun in his backpack.

After he was arrested, he told officers, “I'm already in hot water. I didn't know no weapon was in my car."

Stewart was charged with receiving stolen property, Channel 2 said. He was not charged with burglary because he was not in the house when police arrived.

One resident said, "I hope it's an example that you can't just come to Alpharetta and get away with anything."
