An Atlanta man convicted of five Cobb County robberies is heading to prison for 40 years, officials say.
Emmanuel Lee Dukes, who blamed his crimes on his drug habit, was caught after his mom turned him, Cobb County District Attorney’s Office spokeswoman Kimberly Isaza said Friday in a news release.
The now 26-year-old stole $8,000 during a nine-day crime spree in May 2015.
He approached women tellers at Regions Banks in Marietta and Kennesaw, a Best Bank in Mableton and a SunTrust bank in Smyrna, demanding, “Give me all hundreds or I’ll shoot.”
Dukes was arrested after his mother saw a news report about the robberies and identified him to police. He wore bright orange Nike sneakers in at least three of the robberies, and he was also wearing those sneakers at the time of his arrest, Isaza said.
In the May 10, 2015, convenience store robbery at Calm Convenience Texaco in Austell, Dukes was armed with a handgun.
“Drugs make people do stupid, dangerous things,” Assistant District Attorney Shep Orlow said. “He will now have a good long time to reflect on his actions.”
Dukes’ plea, to one armed robbery and four robberies, allows him to serve 20 years in prison and 20 years on probation.
