Two teenagers had to be rescued from a burning vehicle after authorities said they crashed into a tree while fleeing Madison County deputies Monday morning, officials said.
The teens, ages 16 and 14, are accused of speeding away from a deputy about 1:20 a.m. The Jeep the teens were in pulled in front a patrol car along Ga. 29, nearly causing a crash, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s office.
Investigators later determined the vehicle had been stolen from Athens-Clarke County, agency spokesman Capt. Jimmy Patton said.
The deputy tried to pull over the Jeep, but its driver allegedly fled at speeds between 95 and 110 mph.
The Jeep traveled along Old Danielsville Road onto Catalpa Drive, where it sped through a residential neighborhood, the report said. The chase ended when the Jeep crashed into a tree at the Hemlock Way intersection, entrapping both teens.
A deputy said he pulled the two injured teens from the vehicle and performed first aid on them until an ambulance arrived. They were taken to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, where they remain with serious injuries.
Their conditions have not been released. Authorities are withholding their names because they are juveniles.
The Georgia State Patrol was called to investigate the crash.
