A 2-year-old shot his 11-year-old sister in the leg at a Newnan restaurant, police said.

The incident happened about 2:15 p.m. Sunday at the No. 1 Buffet in the 1700 block of Newnan Crossing Boulevard, Newnan police spokeswoman Gina Snider said. The family was sitting down preparing to eat, Channel 2 Action News reported.

According to police, the toddler found his mother’s .380-caliber handgun in her purse and accidentally shot his sister.

But Newnan police told Channel 2 that a plastic piece at the bottom of the holster had a screw that holds it in place, so when the child pulled the trigger the screw went through the sister’s leg, not a bullet.

“Medical staff was able to determine it was not a bullet (that hit the girl), it was a machine-type screw,” Newnan police Lt. Tate Washington told the news station.

Washington said the child had surgery to remove the screw at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The names of the victim, the toddler and the mother were not released.

No charges have been filed. Snider said the investigation is ongoing.
