Authorities Wednesday were still trying to determine what injured a man burned Tuesday afternoon after opening a package at an Atlanta thrift store.
Police have determined that the package was not a bomb, Atlanta Police spokesman Sgt. Gregory Lyon said.
Just before 3 p.m., Atlanta Police dispatch said a 23-year-old man at VEO Thrift Store at 1599 Memorial Drive in Atlanta suffered minor burns to his arms and legs when he opened a package.
Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said Wednesday that the victim told officers that he was “opening packages in the thrift store when a spool of wire began to burn after making a loud noise.”
Channel 2 Action news reported that the man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition.
Police, firefighters, and agents from the FBI, the GBI and U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were called to the scene to investigate.
“It was determined that the device was not an improvised explosive device nor was there any type of threat assocaited with the incident,” Jones said. “The investigation of what type of device was involved is still ongoing.”
Atlanta Police spokesman Carlos Campos referred to the Boston Marathon bombing on Monday, where two explosive devices killed three people and injured more than 170, to explain the large federal and state law enforcement pressence.
“Given yesterday’s events, we’re going to be extra cautious,” Campos said. “That’s why you see the response that you’re seeing here today.”
