Police say a Henry County man who was shot and killed in his car while sitting in his driveway likely never saw the gun.

Derante “Tae” Bailey was shot in the back of the head outside his Simpson Street home about 8:30 p.m. Monday, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The 22-year-old had lived in the home alone for about a year, family members told Channel 2.

When she arrived to see heavy police activity, Bailey’s great aunt, Ingrid Smith, said she broke down.

“By the time I got over there and saw all the lights and stuff, I just lost it,” Smith told the news station.

Family members told Channel 2 that Bailey’s house was broken into a few months ago, too.

Neighbors, some of whom are relatives, told Channel 2 they heard multiple gunshots and believed someone targeted Bailey by waiting for him to get in his car.

“They said that everything that he had was on him,” Smith said. “His money, his keys was in the ignition, his cellphone was in his lap.”

An official cause of death is pending an autopsy.
