Police arrested a man Monday in connection with the New Year's Day vandalism of a Florida mosque.
Michael Scott Wolfe, 35, was arrested after police said he arrived at the mosque's carport at 11 p.m. on Friday and broke several cameras, lights and windows with a machete before leaving bacon on the doors, WKMG reports. Iman Muhammad Musri, president of the Islamic Society of Central Florida, told Florida Today that while the damage done to the mosque will be repaired, "the psychological damage will be lasting."
"You can't help but feel this is a hateful act. All of the negative media, the politicians who want to ban Muslims, close mosques ... messages like that motivate people who have an illness in their heart," he added. "We've been in this community for so many years. This is a great community and this act is not typical of the good people or the city.”
Wolfe was charged with criminal mischief, a third-degree felony and is being held on $2,000 bond.
