A grandmother who was the victim of a carjacking at Lenox Square spoke out in an interview Thursday.

Anita Thomas talked exclusively to Channel 2 Action News reporter Tom Regan about how she maintained her composure when a man approached her in a parking garage at the mall.

Thomas told Channel 2 that the man was “crouched between two cars” when she and her two granddaughters, ages 12 and 14, got out of their car in the Neiman Marcus parking garage. She said the carjacker pointed a gun at her.

“I said to my granddaughters, ‘Run,’” Thomas said.

The man demanded Thomas’ phone and the keys to her car. Thomas’ granddaughters asked a shopper for help, and a bystander called police.

“(My granddaughters) are traumatized and stressed,” Thomas said. “The only reason I’m doing this is to try to turn a bad situation into something good and help others.”

Police were able to recover the stolen vehicle hours later.
