A Gwinnett man told police his stepson had threatened his siblings and cut his brother with a knife shortly before an officer shot the teenager, according to a 911 call released Thursday.

“He has gone completely psycho,” the man shouted on the tape. “He said I can’t do anything about what he is about to do.”

The man told the 911 operator that he had been disciplining his 16-year-old stepson by taking his electronic gadgets for skipping school, staying out late and getting drunk. While at work, the man said he received a threatening call from his stepson that made him believe his children were in danger.

“He said that it is a mistake to put him on punishment because he is there alone with everybody and he has started to destroy everything in the house,” the man said, while driving home to the Sugar Mill Apartments on Walther Boulevard on Wednesday afternoon.

The man told the operator he believed his 10-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son were in danger. He called again when he arrived seven minutes later to report the stepson had cut his brother.

Gwinnett Police Officer K.E. Williams, 29, told investigators that he was met by the stepfather and the 16-year-old, who was armed with a knife, said Scott Dutton with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is looking into the shooting. Despite warnings by Williams, the teenager reportedly advanced toward the officer as he backed away, shouting commands, Dutton said. The officer shot him.

The 16-year-old, whose name has not been released, was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition, Dutton said.

The stepfather said he had called the police Tuesday night because his stepson had not come come home from school and he was intoxicated when he did arrive at 11 p.m. Wednesday morning, the teenager refused to go to school until the police were called again, he said.
