The GBI is investigating a former Rockdale County deputy accused of stealing guns from the sheriff’s office’s evidence room and selling them for cash, Channel 2 Action News reported.
“There was a tip received in reference to the handling of our weapons that were supposed to be destroyed,” Yolande Lovingood-Moore told Channel 2.
Daniel Lang managed the evidence and property room at the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, but he was demoted earlier this year after an audit alleged he sold the weapons to pawn shops instead of destroying them, the sheriff’s office told Channel 2.
He later resigned, citing personal reasons.
Not long after that, the sheriff’s office requested the GBI to conduct an investigation, Channel 2 reported. Lang has not been charged.
GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles told the news station it is unclear how much money Lang allegedly made from the weapons. Authorities also don’t know how many guns were sold.
“I don't have an exact number, but I do know if it's one gun, we want it investigated,” Lovingood-Moore told Channel 2. “We don't want it to get into the hands of the wrong person.”
