A Clayton County seventh-grader accidentally shot himself in the head this week while broadcasting on a social media site, police said.

Malachi Nasi Hemphill, 13, of Forest Park, was found unconscious at his home on Pineridge Court, Forest Park police Maj. Chris Matson said.

Hemphill’s mother, Shaniqua Stephens, said she heard a loud bang, went upstairs and found her son shot, Channel 2 Action News reported. Hemphill’s camera phone was recording onto Instagram Live at the time.

He was taken to the hospital where he later died, Channel 2 reported.

Matson said detectives are investigating how the Babb Middle School student got the 9mm semi-automatic pistol.

Police are hoping to obtain footage of the shooting from Instagram. No charges have been filed.
