Cobb County soccer coach in jail on child pornography charges

Channel 2's Ross Cavitt reports.

A veteran Cobb County soccer coach was in jail without bond Wednesday after being arrested on child pornography charges, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Acworth police seized the computers of Michael Shaner and detectives found seven videos of children ages 5 to 12 performing sex acts, according to a Cobb County arrest warrant. There were also 61 pictures of nude children, the warrant said.

Police said Shaner received or disseminated child pornographic images between Aug. 21 and Aug. 25 at his Spring Street apartment, according to the warrant. The arrest was part of an investigation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Channel 2 reported.

Shaner is charged with computer exploitation of a child and possession of marijuana less than one ounce, according the arrest warrant.

Channel 2 reported that Shaner’s social media profile lists him as a soccer coach and affiliated with the Southern Soccer Academy in Marietta, a group with 500 youth teams. His posts show he often coaches teams of young girls, the TV station said.
