‘Who would kill my baby?’: 3-year-old’s mom breaks down after drive-by

Someone fired a shot at a woman's SUV, killing her 3-year-old son on Easter Sunday, DeKalb police said.

Hours after someone opened fire on her SUV and killed her 3-year-old son as he slept in his car seat, Rashonda Craig returned to the scene, fell to her knees and cried.

“Who would kill my baby?” she asked.

That is a question DeKalb County police are trying to answer as well, but detectives suspect neither the mother nor the child were the targets of the shooting.

“We believe (the shooter/s) thought someone else was driving the car,” DeKalb police spokeswoman Shiera Campbell said.

Since Sunday night, authorities have been looking for a gray Dodge Charger that pulled alongside Craig’s SUV just before someone inside the car fired the fatal shot. There were no suspects Monday afternoon.

Craig said she was driving on Eastland Road near Bouldercrest Road in southeast Atlanta about 11:30 p.m. She told Channel 2 she saw a paintball gun.

“And then I heard a real gun,” Craig said.

Craig realized her son, who was strapped in the car seat behind her, was unresponsive and pulled over at Bouldercrest Road and Cecilia Drive, DeKalb police Lt. Lonzy Robertson said.

The child, identified as T’Rhigi Diggs, was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. T’Rhigi, Craig’s only child, had just celebrated his birthday Friday.

Anyone with information about the shooting or the Charger is asked to call 911. The Charger had a temporary tag, police said.
