Officers responded to a call about 4:30 a.m. about a woman being held against her will at gunpoint at an apartment on Bent Creek Way, Atlanta Deputy Chief Jeff Glazier said.

“The officers took on the suspect,” Glazier said. “It turned into a running gun battle throughout the apartment complex.”

The suspect, 21, shot at officers with a rifle, and five Atlanta officers returned fire, Glazier said.

The suspect was shot in the stomach and leg. He was also taken to Grady, where he is in stable condition.

Neighbors told Channel 2 Action News the shooting is the third violent incident reported in the area recently.

Atlanta police are investigating the initial shooting that led to the woman’s injuries.

The GBI is investigating the officers’ involvement in the shootout.
