A driver-less dump truck rolled about 40 yards before hitting a parked car, causing the car to crash into a Gwinnett County apartment building Wednesday night.

No one was injured in the incident at the Arbor Mill apartments on Graves Road in Norcross, according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett fire department. But some residents were evacuated until inspectors could determine if the building was safe, Rutledge said.

The dump truck was part of a grading operation and the driver was away from the vehicle when it began to roll down a hill shortly before 7 p.m., investigators said.

"We are fortunate that no one was home in the ground floor apartment and that the vehicle and dump truck were unoccupied," Rutledge said.

When the car struck the building, it took out a load-bearing wall, according to firefighters at the scene. Crews were working to stabilize the building late Wednesday.

Apartment managers provided the displaced residents with another place to spend the night.
