Seven 1-day-old puppies were found abandoned in a dumpster behind a Cobb County store on Dallas Highway on Sunday.

The puppies were left in a small, closed box in the dumpster. Craig Sloan and his wife heard the puppies crying when they were looking for boxes in the dumpster, according to the incident report. Sloan told authorities the newborn puppies were still wet and had their umbilical cords still attached.

Sloan and his wife took the puppies out of the box, put them in a clean box and tried to give them water. They called 911 and Cobb County police responded to the call. The puppies were taken to Jennifer Siegel with Bosley’s Place, a nursery for neonatal puppies.

The incident is an animal cruelty case, according to the report.

Channel 2 Action News said Siegel took the puppies and is nursing them back to health. She said they were anemic and covered in fleas and that they likely also have internal parasites.

Bosley’s Place is looking for someone to take the puppies until they are old enough for adoption.
