Atlanta mayor is now a dad and husband

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed announced this week that his first child had arrived and oh, by the way, he’s married now.

“Today, Sarah-Elizabeth Reed and I are blessed to announce the birth of our first child, Maria Kristan Reed,” the mayor said in a statement released Thursday evening. No prior wedding announcement had been made. The mayor announced on March 31 that he was engaged and that the couple was expecting.

“I could not feel more blessed that she agreed to marry me, and we look forward to building a family together in the greatest city in America,” Reed said then. “I am honored to have our friends and family share this special moment with us and I ask that our privacy is respected as we celebrate this personal occasion.”

True to form, the mayor of one of the country’s most wired cities hadn’t said a word about his new wife or baby on his social platforms as of Friday evening. The most recent post on his Facebook page (which actually includes a photo of him at Facebook headquarters) is a statement of condolence following Maya Angelou’s May 28 death. Reed’s most recent Twitter post was a June 4 message about free wireless access at the airport, although his account did retweet some media accounts of his new status as husband and dad.

“I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received from our family and friends,” Reed’s Thursday statement said. “This is truly the happiest moment of my life. As we celebrate our daughter’s birth, we ask that you continue to respect the privacy of our growing family.”

Reed, 44, and the former Sarah Elizabeth Langford, his longtime girlfriend, were engaged during a trip to the Bahamas. The mayor’s office did not say when or where the couple wed.
