On social media, Mark Ruffalo has backtracked from his initial post regarding the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict to a more moderate position.

The actor tweeted Monday, “I have reflected & wanted to apologize for posts during the recent Israel/Hamas fighting that suggested Israel is committing ‘genocide’.”

One of his initial tweets May 11 suggested Israel’s actions were comparable to apartheid in South Africa and that sanctions could similarly work against Israel.

Many Twitter users are weighing in; some thanking Ruffalo and others questioning why.

A bilateral cease-fire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas took hold Friday after an 11-day massacre, in which at least 230 Palestinians and 12 Israelis were killed.

There have been massive pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian demonstrations across the world.
