8th person dies from Easter tornado in North Georgia’s Murray County

A tornado that destroyed numerous homes in Murray County last month has claimed its eighth victim.

Harlan Blackstock, 57, died Thursday night at a Chattanooga hospital, according to the Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office. Blackstock was injured April 12 when a powerful EF2 tornado hit Murray.

Seven people were killed that night in Murray County, including three members of the same family, the coroner previously said. Another man was killed in Bartow County, where another tornado hit overnight.

The National Weather Service later determined as many as 22 tornadoes struck Georgia late on Easter Sunday and into the early-morning hours.

Murray Coroner Jason Gibson identified those killed were Rebecca Beck, 59; Deanna Zambrano, 20; Laquita Thomas, 63; Richard Irwin, 50; Wilber Brookshire, 79; Myrtle Brookshire, 75; and Wilber Brookshire Jr., 48. Those killed lived in a mobile home community heavily damaged by the twister.

In addition to those killed the night of the storm, 23 others from Murray County were taken to hospitals for treatment, officials previously said.

Kimberly Shoemaker, her husband Randy, and the couple's two children huddled together in the bathroom late Sunday moments before their home was destroyed. All four were uninjured. April 13, 2020
