The Environmental Protection Division recently announced a 30-day public comment period for an application for a variance submitted by Sugar Hill to encroach within the 25-foot state waters buffer along the Sugar Hill Greenway.

Specifically, this would allow construction of the multi-use trail beginning at Whitehead Road for approximately 4.45 miles to West Broad Street and Level Creek Road in Sugar Hill.

Mitigation planned for the permanent buffer impacts will include planting multi-trophic, native riparian vegetation along the Sugar Hill Greenway near Whitehead Road and Suwanee Dam Road. The proposed project will result in about 4,184 square feet of buffer disturbances along the unnamed perennial stream, a tributary to Level Creek in the Upper Chattahoochee Watershed.

Site plans are available for review at the EPD Watershed Protection Branch, 200 Piedmont Avenue SW, Suite 418 West, Atlanta, GA 30334. Contact Arnettia Murphy at 470-607-2940 or arnettia.murphy@dnr.ga.gov to schedule an appointment to review the plans.

Written comments can be submitted to Program Manager, NonPoint Source Program, Erosion and Sedimentation Control, 2 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive SW, Suite 1462 East, Atlanta, GA 30334.

The comment period ends Nov. 8.
