Dogs are often called man's best friend. But how does one become the best friend of man's best friend?
According to Mother Nature Network, to earn the title, people should stop doing a few things that dogs hate.
First on the list, MNN said humans use too much spoken language with dogs and not enough body language. The site says oftentimes, body language contradicts spoken language.
Next, hugging your dog might seem affectionate to us primates, but to canines, putting a limb or paw on another dog is a sign of trying to exert dominance. They interpret hugs from humans in the same way. They don't like it.
Dogs also don't like to be pet on the head or face. The site says the animals prefer to be patted on the rear.
Eye contact is unnerving to dogs from people they don't know, a trait that's shared by many humans too.
The site says dogs like structure and rules and don't do well when they don't have them.
Taking dogs on a walk and not giving them the opportunity to stop and smell is very annoying to them, MMN wrote. In contrast, keeping them on too tight a leash makes them nervous, because they assume the dog walkers or owners are nervous too.
