October has been proclaimed Georgia Archives Month by Gov. Nathan Deal.

The observance, which spotlights the various archives, special collections and libraries around the state, is sponsored by the Society of Georgia Archivists. Check the organization’s website, www.soga.org, and look under Events and Education to learn about special October activities planned by archives around Georgia.

The theme this year, “Current Events, Future History,” is the subject of a poster that can be found on the website. If you would like to post an event honoring Georgia Archives Month that your group is sponsoring, email the information to ga.archivesmonth@gmail.com.

While the month honors all archives around the state run by private groups or government, the society is celebrating the fact that the Georgia Archives has expanded its public research hours to four days a week, Wednesday through Saturday. For more on the struggle to keep the Georgia Archives open, see the SGA journal Provenance’s special issue on advocacy. Go to the group’s website for more information.

Georgia State University archives

The Georgia Archives Lunch and Learn program for Oct. 11 will feature the staff of Georgia State University’s Archives and Special Collections discussing the school’s valuable and expanding collection.

The noon event is free; bring your own lunch. For more on the Georgia Archives, future lectures, or to suggest topics, check www.georgiaarchives.org.
