Almost all cameras in smartphones are equipped with GPS technology, which will automatically tag a photo with a location. Then, anyone who views the image can access information about the location.

Some phones arrive with the “geotagging” option enabled by default, but users can manually disable the function. Be aware that it also could affect other location-based features.

Disabling depends on the brand and model of smartphone. For example, most BlackBerry geotagging options can be found in the phone’s camera settings.

The websites www.icanstalku.com and realitypod.com offer detailed instructions for disabling various BlackBerry and Android phones.

With iPhones, users can:

1. Call up the “settings” menu and click on “general.”

2. Under “general,” find and click on “location services.”

3. Check if your “location services” are on.

4. If so, and you want to disable any tracking possibilities, change the setting to “off.”
