Cops in Lowell posted a video to YouTube Tuesday showing a holiday prank designed to spread goodwill for two days at the end of November.

The officers pulled over about 50 drivers for  minor traffic violations, engaged them in conversation, then made the drivers wait while "tickets" were written — only to return with gifts for their families. (Source: Lowell P.D. Facebook page)

The gifts were generous: an electric scooter, Lego kits, a video gaming system — various things the drivers had mentioned to the officers in conversation.

The police cooperated with the charade, but a Christian-based TV network, UP TV,  was behind it all. The traffic stops and surprise gift giving were captured on video for a Christmas-themed reality show.

The City of Lowell's video about the event may make you smile. But some people who commented on YouTube found it disturbing.
