A Canadian woman went into premature labor in Hawaii last year, but her insurer —  Blue Cross — won't pick up the nearly $1 million bill because she had a bladder infection during her pregnancy.

The insurance company called the infection a pre-existing condition of a “high-risk pregnancy,” even though Jennifer Huculak-Kimmel’s doctor says it did not lead to her early labor.

Huculak-Kimmel also had her doctor’s approval before she traveled to Hawaii with her husband in October 2013. She said the couple bought the insurance specifically for their vacation, when she was six months pregnant.
