This spring offers many opportunities for genealogy education and I hope readers will take advantage of them.

A consortium consisting of the Genealogy Study Group in Lawrenceville, the Georgia Genealogical Society, local chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons) is sponsoring a genealogy workshop May 16 at the church, 3355 Sugarloaf Parkway, Lawrenceville.

Four classes will be offered at each of four time slots between 9 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Topics range from beginning genealogy to various techniques, such as using time lines, military research, Georgia land lotteries and website research.

One class for young researchers (12 years old and older) will help get a new generation going. The computer lab tract, with limited seating, is devoted to learning more about familysearch.org.

The workshop is free, but advance reservations are requested for the regular sessions and required for the lab. To make a reservation or obtain additional information, contact Terry Manning at temanning@aol.com or genealogyworkshop.wix.com/genealogyworkshop.

Membership discount

A discount for ancestry.com membership is being offered via AARP, whether you are already a member or looking to sign up for the first time. Since Ancestry is the premier website for finding genealogy materials online, it's worth checking into. Call 1-800-514-4645o or go to ancestry.com/cs/us/aarp.

Sons of Confederate Veterans

The Sons of Confederate Veterans, organized in 1896, has 108 local camps or chapters in Georgia, with 19 in the Atlanta area. Membership is based on having an ancestor who fought in any military branch or served in the government for the Confederate States of America.

You can join as an associate and have your genealogy researched to obtain full membership. For information, check gascv.org, then look under "member resources." A list of local camps and commanders is on the site. The mailing address for the organization's national headquarters is P.O. Box 59, Columbia, TN 38402.

Projects include a grave registry to document all Confederate veterans’ gravesites, restoration of gravestones and cemeteries, as well as obtaining Veterans Affairs tombstones for any unmarked Confederate soldier. You can also find out about that under member resources on the website.
