In 2022, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution revealed conditions at Georgia's prisons that one U.S. senator called "tragic and wholly unacceptable." The mounting violence and criminal activities inside the facilities included sexual assaults, extortion and murders carried out with impunity. The series also documented how prison staff were outnumbered, intimidated, or otherwise unable to maintain order.
