Celebrate the Sweet Auburn Historic District this weekend with a free, daylong outdoor festival.
The festival will include shopping, food, art and entertainment, and more. It will take place on Auburn Ave. from Jackson to Howell Streets.
Family Day/Culture Fest takes place on July 30 from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
The event hosted by the National Black Arts Festival, National Park Service and Sweet Auburn Works, will feature various opportunities for families to learn the history of the Sweet Auburn Historic District.
A stage near Howell Street on Auburn Avenue will include theatrical performances, in addition to live music from local church choirs, dance, art and more.
A food court will allow attendees to indulge in international cuisine, while a cooking demonstration from Sweet Auburn Bread's Chef Sonya will showcase a healthier way to satisfy your dessert craving.
In addition to learning about the area through art, neighborhood tours and a series called porch talks" will allow attendees to better understand the history of the Sweet Auburn District.
Neighborhood tours will include Martin Luther King Jr.’s birth home, the Butler Street YMCA and more.
"Porch Talks" will take place at various locations on Auburn Avenue. The Dobbs Family will talk about the legacy of John Wesley Dobbs, while Helen Mills will speak on being an Old Fourth Ward resident for 85 years and Mary Gurley will talk about being a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church choir during King's association with the local church.
“Atlanta welcomes home-grown friends and family, new-school and old-school, to learn about the Martin Luther King Jr Historic District and to experience and enjoy the sweetness in Sweet Auburn,” a press release for the event read.
