Walgreen Co. said Friday afternoon that its prescription system was up and working again after being taken down earlier in the day.

The shutdown drew criticism on the company’s Facebook page where posts noted how people could suffer serious problems if they couldn’t fill prescriptions, and if dosages were missed.

Walgreen spokesman James Graham emailed this explanation in response to questions about the outage:

“Early today, while carrying out a maintenance update of our prescription database, we encountered a technical problem that led us to temporarily bring our retail pharmacy system offline, which impacted all of our pharmacies.”

He added that by about 2 p.m. Atlanta time, all pharmacies were “operating normally.”

Walgreen has 107 stores in Georgia, according to its website.
