State Farm Insurance Co. plans to build a national operations center in Dunwoody, the DeKalb County city announced.
The center will be built on a nearly 4-acre site at Hammond Drive and Perimeter Center Parkway, across from the Dunwoody MARTA station. The site is now the location of a Chequers Seafood Grill restaurant and former Fuddruckers eatery.
Dunwoody spokesman Bob Mullen said Friday that State Farm has not provided the city with a construction timetable, the project’s scale or how many employees the property and casualty insurer will have at the new location.
The location will serve as the heart of Illinois-based State Farm’s Perimeter corporate campus, the city said in a release.
Dunwoody’s director of economic development, Michael Starling, said in a statement that State Farm’s decision to build the new operations center in the city “is a landmark occasion” not just for Dunwoody but the entire Perimeter Center market.
“The addition of new class A office space and retail across from the Dunwoody MARTA station helps to establish a walkable and transit-oriented corporate campus,” Starling said.
In February, State Farm confirmed it was expanding its operations in the Atlanta area, Dallas and Phoenix. In addition to the 3.9-acre site, State Farm recently bought the 10-story Hammond Exchange building and 13 acres of undeveloped land in Dunwoody.
In August, the insurer announced it was selling property in Johns Creek, where it has customer service, operations and support staff. The two buildings house 2,000 employees. The company said it planned to lease the property back from the eventual purchaser for 10 years.
In 2012, the company signed a lease agreement for 64 and 66 Perimeter Center East.
The city said State Farm will work with KDC Real Estate Development and Investments in the land development purchase.
