Shopping in June comes just after Memorial Day blowout sales, but rather than taking a breather from the ever-churning world of retail, anyone looking for gifts or hoping to get their body beach ready would do well to look for deals this month.
"Going into June, you will see a lot of gift buying — graduation, Father's Day and lots of wedding gifts," says Trae Bodge, senior editor of consumer website RetailMeNot.com.
The items that are most deeply discounted are home decor and dishes, she says, a perfect gift for graduates or newlyweds. Retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Macy’s and Kohl’s host home sales throughout June where you can score discounts of up to 50 percent off, as well as dollar discounts off a certain amount spent. From June 12-22, for example, you can get 20-50 percent off home goods at Bloomingdale’s, she says.
For wedding gifts, Bodge suggests checking the couple's registry, then going off list for similar, but more affordable items. "See if you can find something comparable with the same design sensibility that may be priced better elsewhere," she says. Personalized items also make great gifts for grads, and you can get good deals on sites like Personal Creations, which is offering 40 percent off one item when you purchase two or more, Bodge says.
Anyone wanting to get in shape for swimsuit season can check out a few deals in the world of fitness. You can request a free trial at any gym before joining even if it is not being advertised, Bodge says. If you are more interested in working out at home, it’s also a good time to find discounts on workout equipment. Sears has fitness equipment up to 40 percent off, and Sports Authority has equipment up to 50 percent off, Bodge says.
Tools also will be discounted this month — a bonus for crafty dads or homeowners looking to do some home improvement. Sears is a source for tools at up to 50 percent off, and Home Depot has a big Father’s Day sale in June, Bodge says.
Avoid buying seasonal items such as summer apparel and patio furniture, all of which will see higher price reductions later in the summer. If you must invest in summer clothing, Bodge says stick to basics and check retailers like Old Navy, H&M and the Gap, where you will see rolling sales throughout the summer.
For on trend items outside of those brands, prices will be better in July, Bodge says, just in time for the beginning of back-to-school shopping.
