January foreclosure notices in metro Atlanta fell to the lowest monthly total since 2001, a further indication that the area is continuing to dig out from the housing crisis.

There were only 1,691 properties advertised for foreclosure this month in a 13-county area, according to figures released today by Kennesaw-based Equity Depot. That was down 31 percent from a year ago and 19 percent from last month.

Barry Bramlett, president of the company, said in a statement that part of the decline can be attributed to the holidays. But still, he added, the numbers remain way down.

Last year, the total number of notices fell to 27,431, a drop of 46 percent from the year before and a decline of 79 percent from the peak of 127,140 in 2010.

Properties adverstised this month are auctioned off next month, unless the owner and mortgage company can negotiate an extension.
