Yesterday, Channel 2 Action News reported scammers attempting to rip off Georgia charities.
The Georgia Secretary of State office found 20 targets, including Bert's Big Adventure, the charity arm for syndicated radio personality Bert Weiss, heard locally on Q100.
The charity, which has sent 15 chronically or terminally ill children and their families to Disney World in Orlando each year for the past 15 years, received a bogus check for $44,850. Then the supposed donor would request $15,000 back because the amount was an "error."
Bert's Big Adventure officials flagged the scammer because they couldn't get on the phone with him and felts his request seemed too fishy. So they never cashed it and reported it to the authorities instead.
"I can't figure out why you'd want to victimize any kind of charity that is trying to do good," Weiss told Jim Strickland, WSB-TV investigative reporter.
Nobody has figured out who is doing it just yet but Weiss wanted to publicize this to warn other charities.
