FX's sturdy, devilish animated series "Archer," created by two Atlantans, has been rewarded sixth and seventh seasons.
Matt Thompson and Adam Reed, both local guys, came up with the show, which is now the second most popular basic cable comedy among younger viewers. The half-hour comedy has seen its audience grow steadily though numbers have been a little weaker recently. (The last episode this past Monday drew just 874,000 viewers, half as much as the season debut.)
This renewal will get the show to 85 episodes by 2016, enough for the show to be syndicated and a big payday for Thompson and Reed, according to Hollywood Reporter.
They now run Atlanta-based Floyd County Productions, which creates "Archer" and helps out with another FX series "Chozen."
"Adam and I are incredibly excited about the pickup," Thompson wrote today in an email. "Specifically the double season order is great news for our burgeoning animation staff. Being able to walk out to the animation floor and tell all of these kids they have a job for the next two years, that really feels good. There is not a ton of stability in this line of work and the peace of mind that buys is invaluable.".
"Archer," originally focused on a fictional spy agency and a raffish James Bond-ish lead character, has shifted focus season five. The ISIS spy agency was found to not be legit. When the crew discovered a cache of cocaine, they decide to embark on a life of crime instead.
"The two season order also means we have to hurry and think of stuff to do," Thompson noted. "If only we knew where to get some cocaine..."
Obviously, this show targets adults.
Season five is now also being called "Archer Vice."
