Back in 2013, I wrote about a short-lived Lifetime reality series named "Pretty Wicked Moms." I watched the pilot and wrote about the ladies on the show, including "Southern glam besties" Emily Dees Boulden and Nicole Noles. This is what I wrote about them:
Emily hangs with her bestie, Nicole Noles, who dresses like Emily and kow-tows to her. Nicole dotes on her Shih Tzu so she's called the "doggie mom."
When the two of them together, you might as well start coughing up hair balls because the cattiness starts flying
Ouch! When I met with Boulden last week to talk about her new FYI reality show "Get Swank'd," I didn't even remember writing this or knew she was part of that show. (I told her I have since written 2,000 stories. My short-term memory gets quickly crowded out, especially shows that only last a seaons.)
She, of course, remembered what I wrote but fortunately for me, she didn't take it personally. She said based on what I saw, she would have interpreted herself as the "mean girl" as well.
She said she hated that the show made it seem like she put her businesses ahead of her daughter. "Of course I don't do that," Boulden said. She also said she would sometimes joke about things and say silly things like "I'm the queen! Oh my God! I am so fabulous!" "I make fun of myself and then say, 'I'm kidding!' and laugh it off. But then the editors just edit that 'I'm joking' part."
Boulden has since gotten over whatever pain that show caused her and looks at the bright side. "It's how we got our spinoff," she said. Plus, she was able to build a decent social media following, enabling her to promote "Get Swank'd." (She has 41,000 Twitter followers and 47,000 Instagram followers.)
Since the show, Boulden has had two more children in a span of two years, shut down her Birmingham store and focused on her Buckhead store, which she opened in 2010, and her website. ("I didn't realize I was such as fertile myrtle!" she said.)
This new show has none of said cattiness of "Pretty Wicked Moms." It's a make-over show in which she and Noles go on the road. "We have a boutique 'Swank' truck," Boulden said. "We go to a farmer's market. We go to Birmingham. We go to a hot chocolate expo." (Yes, that's a thing!)
She said she was pregnant with her third child during filming: "I don't know how I did it!"
Boulden loves doing makeovers "and changing people's lives. This is why I do this. I love women to be beautiful and confident. I really do. This is a hard business. Women are jealous of other women. To me, I'm not that way. I have never been! I want people to look good!"
"Women dress for women," she added. "This show is for women. It just feels good. It's not like your normal makeover show. Nicole and I are outrageous. We do funny things. One time, I hit a speed bump while driving and she flies out of the chair, her feet go up in the air. It's the funniest!"
She tries to pick clothing and accessories for her store that are fashion forward and cutting edge. She is focusing on building her website, which now entails half her sales.
