I was expecting Rayvon Owen to go home along with Maddie Walker.
But Rayvon survived over Adanna Duru, who I think is a more dynamic performer but also a more erratic singer. Rayvon is a pretty singer but pretty boring at times, too.
Maddie was just biding time until her inevitable departure. I never understood how she got as far as she did based purely on her wooden personality on stage. Her vocals weren't half bad. Her song choices were questionable. She was going to sing "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" tonight if she had survived. I shudder to think. Why not country, Maddie? How about Reba or Dolly or the Judds? Stay in your lane!
Overall, it was an okay night, not the best or worst. I just have to pretend David Hasselhoff never happened. Please.
If seeing Boy George made you want to see her live, he's touring in Atlanta in August. His vocals on "Karma Chameleon" tonight? Just so so. I wonder how much of his voice he has left.
Of course, Daniel Seavey survived yet again. I know a vast majority of the blog readers here wanted him to go home last week. But his fan base is keeping him around and tonight, he was passable. In an odd way, that might hurt him.
Best of the night easily was Clark Beckham. He found a way to change things up with a classic Police song and it worked.
My rankings: 1. Clark 2. Nick 3. Jax 4. Quentin 5. Qaasim 6. Tyanna 7. Daniel 8. Rayvon 9. Joey
Who will go home? Tough call. Joey had a terrible week and could be in trouble. Rayvon was a bore but he got the "pimp" spot by simply barely surviving. (There is no more "pimp" spot anymore now in a sense.)
Anyway, up first:
Daniel Seavey ("You Make My Dreams" Hall & Oates) - "You've got to relax and trust you can do it," Boy George said. "Trust and confidence." He was adequately pleasant. Keith said he loosened up toward the end. "You gotta get more comfortable quicker." JLo: "The audience loves you at home. I really love this for you. I felt like it sat in the right place for your voice." HCJ: "Take the choreography and throw it away. Go out and have a good time. Get out there and screw around."
Grade: B/B-plus
Chance of going through: Not bad. He keeps on survivin'
Quentin Alexander ("In the Air Tonight" Phil Collins) - Boy George enjoys Quentin's fashion taste, of course. He tells him to work his breathing better. He brings a decent level of intensity and drama. It was solid vocal, even with a few pitch issues. JLo: "Your cool factor was on a thousand." HCJ: "You dig about as deeply as you can with the lyrics. It's great to see how you interpret them. Five out of last six songs were pretty slow. How many medium tempo and slow songs can you string together. It'd be nice to hear something more uptempo." Keith: "It suited you really good." And he used the word "artistry" but suggested more command of his phrasing. I agree.
Grade: A-minus/B-plus
Chance of going through next week: Excellent
Joey Cook ("Girls Just Want to Have Fun' Cyndi Lauper) - Yikes. Her first big stinking bomb. That just didn't work - at all. HCJ: "You seem distracted tonight. I felt that you were trying to make a lot of fun but something was holding you back." Keith: He felt she set the bar so high, this was blaringly inconsistent. JLo: "In theory a good song for you but vocally it didn't match."
Grade: C
Chance of going through: Always in danger when you crap out like that
Tyanna Jones ("I Wanna Dance With Somebody" Whitney Houston) - She upgraded from last week. She was good but not great. She didn't quite have that energy that Whitney had singing it though the big note near the end was impressive. Keith: "There were moments when you were worried a bit." JLo: "You won't be perfect all the time. Don't let it get to you. You do what you know what you were born to do." HCJ: "I always feel like you are in the driver's seat. But don't get complacent."
Grade: B-plus
Chance of going through: Hopefully 99%
Jax ("You Give Love A Bad Name" Bon Jovi) - "Don't think, feel," Boy George said. She seems to be embody an 80s vibe already. She kind of gives it a Lady Gaga treatment. I like it. It worked for her style. JLo: "You're giving us all that 80s punk attitude. I love the way you started it. This is the Jax we saw when you walked into the room. You got a little lost in the middle but when you went for it at the end, it worked." HCJ: "Your originality is what you brought you here. Your intrigue kept you here. I agree with Jenn 100%. What if's. If you had kept it on the piano the whole time, it would have been stronger. You were swimming in a lot of sound." Keith: "It wasn't put together right."
Grade: A-minus
Chance of going through: Solid
Nick Fradiani ("Man in the Mirror" Michael Jackson) - HCJ: "A perfect song choice. A fantastic vocal. I finally figured you out. Everybody is telling you how hot you are. You're very attractive. The source is humility. That song is about humility... You are a sweet, kind soul. That's where your strong point is." Keith: "You have a million dollar smile. You should smile through that whole song. That would loosen you up. Sometimes you look like you're meeting your girlfriend's dad for the first time." JLo: "The minute you got caught up and feeling the swell of the arrangement, it became what it was supposed to be."
Grade: A-minus/B-plus
Chance of going through: Great
Break! Salt-n-Pepa are here!
Clark Beckham ("Every Breath You Take" Police) - He made this one work for him. It worked really well. He captured the audience this time. Keith: "It was beautiful. You took me on a journey. Instead of a stalker, you brought out the melancholy and pain I hadn't heard before." JLo: "Goosies!" HCJ: "I got good news and bad news. Bad news that group of people over there is extremely dynamic. The good news is that you don't have to do any of it."
Grade: A
Chance of going through: Guaranteed
Qaasim Middleton ("Addicted to Love" Robert Palmer) - He plans to do less dancing, more singing. He was able to keep himself in check while sustaining a decent vocal and not sacrificing his personality. JLo: "You are a really good vocalist." HCJ: "Your strength is your ability to perform. Your weakness was your unwillingness was to forfeit that... You stood there, you were sexy." Keith: "I hope I hear something more vulnerable" next week.
Grade: B-plus
Chance of going through: Better than average
Rayvon Owen ("Everybody Wants to Rule the World" Tears For Fears) - Snooze city. HCJ: "You bring a strong vocal. What is lacking is a strong interpretation. I felt you were connecting with the lyrics. I could do without the default falsetto." Keith: "A beautiful song for you. You've got to ease into it." JLo: "Don't be afraid to go there."
Grade: B-minus
Chance of going through: Not great. I can't believe he beat out Adanna.
TOUR? WHAT TOUR?
In past years, at this point, Ryan Seacrest would be talking about the top 10 going on tour. Maybe there will be no tour this year.
RATINGS LAST WEEK
The show held steady from a week earlier: 8.5 million viewers, 1.8 18-49 rating. Last year's top 10 was 9.8 million and a 2.2 18-49 rating.
