Number of legislative days remaining: 27
It's Dyslexia Day at the General Assembly. Be kind to those who have trouble reading. And it’s Ground Hog Day, too. So do it like you did yesterday, and the day before that.
It’s also Pastor’s Day. More on that in a paragraph or two.
Lawmaking under the Gold Dome continues today at a slow pace, with two bills scheduled for debate in the Senate and none again in the House. The calendar-setting Rules Committee of the House meets at 9 a.m., leaving open the possibility of a busier day in the House than expected.
Both chambers convene at 10 a.m.
The Senate takes up a bill by Sen. Charlie Bethel, R-Dalton, to clamp down on cases of repeat domestic violence.
Expected to draw attention later in the day, besides committee meetings, is a 1:15 p.m. press conference in the third-largest meeting room in the state Capitol, featuring Sen. Josh McKoon, R-Columbus, Rep. Sam Teasley, R-Marietta, and representatives of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board.
Southern Baptists have been the strongest supporters of McKoon’s “religious liberty” bills and other legislation intended to give conservative Christians shelter from the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision sanctioning gay marriage. They're the sponsors of Pastor's Day.
Featured speakers include:
-- The Rev. Thomas Hammond, president of the Georgia Baptist Convention and lead pastor of Alpharetta First Baptist Church;
-- Dr. J. Robert White, executive director of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board;
-- The Rev. Mike Griffin, public affairs representative for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board.
A group opposing the RFRA legislation, Georgia Republicans for the Future, has scheduled a 2 p.m. press conference elsewhere in the Capitol.
