The shooting death of a 2-year-old Acworth boy remained under investigation Wednesday morning.

"We don't know if he was playing with the gun or not, but he got hold of a handgun and shot himself," Officer Youlanda Leverette said Tuesday night. "It was a family weapon."

The boy's father was home and so was his 4-year-old brother when police got the emergency call about 7:30 p.m., Leverette said.

The shooting happened at a home in the Marina Park subdivision. The gun was left on the bed, Leverette said.

It was unclear late Tuesday whether criminal charges would be filed, Leverette said.

"They are still investigating and at this time nobody has been charged," she said.

The mother was out of the house at the time but has been notified. Police are not identifying the family until other relatives can be notified.
