On this date a long long time ago -- so far back that the Braves were still in Boston, Shirley Temple was still a charming little tyke, and Republicans were still attacking FDR as a socialist for proposing that ghastly Social Security -- a beautiful, dark-haired baby girl was born to Arly Halunen and Loretta Cronin Halunen, and was given the name of Barbara.

So ... happy birthday Mom!!!

Yes, your mother should know, and mine did know and does know. She might not have known EVERYTHING, thank goodness, but back in the day she knew a lot more than she let on. And I suspect she's still got a thing or two up her sleeve.

The Bookman clan is congregating this weekend to spend some time with the birthday girl, and while it wouldn't be polite to divulge her age, I will say that the biggest hit of the year she was born was Fred Astaire's "Cheek to Cheek."

They just don't make classics like that anymore.
