I've been touting the music of Jason Isbell for a few years now. And the good news is, he keeps up his end of the deal by continuing to produce material that more than justifies the praise. In his latest album, "Something More Than Free," the sound is again distinctive, the intelligence at work is distinctive and so is the honesty in which it is offered.
In a recent interview with NPR, for example, the 36-year-old soon-to-be father talked about the impact of realizing that his own mother had been just 17 when he was born. As he describes it in the lyrics of "Children of Children," written in response to seeing he and his mother in old family photographs and realizing just how young she had been:
“I was riding on my mother’s hip, she was shorter than the corn. And all the years you took from her just by being born....”
