Good news, Labor Day travelers: The Georgia Department of Transportation is suspending construction-related closures on interstates and certain high-traffic state routes from noon Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.

GDOT's weekend road work has recently involved significant closures (and delays) at Spaghetti Junction, the Cobb cloverleaf and the Downtown Connector. But not this weekend, which will already see a heavy influx of visitors for a long holiday packed with events, including Dragon Con and the AJC Decatur Book Festival.

Crews may still be working near highways and state routes; and some long-term lane closures may remain, GDOT said in a news release.

“We typically see an increase in roadway fatalities during heavy travel holidays,” GDOT State Construction Engineer Marc Mastronardi said in the release. “We cannot overemphasize the need to slow down, drive alert and take every pre-caution to protect yourself and your passengers.”
