Houston, who lived in Atlanta for years with her then-husband Bobby Brown, died in 2012 at age 48. She was discovered unresponsive in a bathtub on the eve of that year's Grammy Awards, a circumstance tragically similar to her only daughter's. Bobbi Kristina Brown, discovered unresponsive in a bathtub in her north Fulton County townhouse in January 2015, died months later in a Duluth hospice after remaining comatose.
Houston's death was ruled an accidental drowning, with heart disease and drug use cited as contributing factors. Bobbi Kristina's cause of death was ruled immersion in water and drug intoxication. Bobbi Kristina's body was scarred and she was missing teeth, the Fulton County Medical Examiner's report showed.

Oscar-winning director Kevin Macdonald has signed onto the Houston documentary and indicates that the work will present her in a positive light: "I want audiences to walk out of the cinema and feel positive about Whitney and her music. "I want to reveal a woman that even her most die-hard fans never knew; and a woman those new to her life and music will never forget."
